Off-Duty Cop Who Killed Beloved Bear In Newtown Won't Be Charged An off-duty Fairfield County police officer who killed a beloved local bear will not be charged. Bobbi the black bear was killed on Thursday, May 12 in Newtown by Ridgefield police officer Lawrence Clarke. Last week, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection found that based on an investigation there is "insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against the homeowner." Norwalk Infant Dies After Being Found Unresponsive, Police Say An infant who was found unresponsive died despite efforts by first responders in Fairfield County. The incident took place in Norwalk around 2:17 p.m., Sunday, July 10. Norwalk communications received a 911 call regarding an unresponsive infant. Immediately, the dispatcher handling the call began providing resuscitation instructions over the phone, said Sgt. Sofia Gulino, of the Norwalk Police. Sandy Hook Fire Chief Dies After Returning From Call A longtime Fairfield County fire chief has died after responding to a fire call. Sandy Hook Fire Chief William "Bill" Halstead, age 72, a lifelong Newtown resident, who has served the department as chief for 44 years, died on Friday, July 8, after responding to a call, according to Sandy Hook Volunteer fire department officials. Suspect On Run After Juvenile Killed At Large Birthday Party In Fairfield, Police Say A suspect is on the run after a male juvenile was killed during a shooting at a large 13th birthday party at a banquet hall in Fairfield County. The shooting took place in Fairfield at the Calvin United Church banquet hall on Kings Highway East around 10:30 p.m., Saturday, July 9. Spike In Overdoses Reported In This CT County A Connecticut county is reporting a spike alert in overdoses associated with the supply of available drugs in the area. Litchfield County County officials reported that from Tuesday, June 28 to Tuesday, July 5, there were dozens of overdoses, with two of them fatal, according to Fox61. A spike alert is triggered when there have been more than three overdoses in a 24-hour period, officials said. Man Nabbed Trying To Fraudulently Obtain Debit Card At Westport Bank, Police Say A Hudson Valley man has been charged with attempting to fraudulently obtain a debit card in Fairfield County while impersonating the real account holder. The incident took place in Westport on Thursday, June 30 at the TD Bank located at 185 Main St. Officers responded to the bank on a report that a man was attempting to receive a debit card by impersonating the real account holder, said Lt. NY Homeowner Cited For Excessive Airbnb Rentals A New York resident has been ticketed for renting his Long Island home out through Airbnb Inc. at least 55 times during a nine-month period. The owner of the Montauk residence at 64 S. Elroy St., Harvey Elgart was ticketed in June for the rentals that ran from May 2021 until early 2022, according to a statement by East Hampton Town. Man From Region Charged With Attempted Rape, Menacing Of Woman, Police Say A man has been charged with alleged attempted rape after holding a woman who had a protective order against him in the region.
