James 'Pat' Winn, Retired Darien Police Lieutenant, Dies at 73
DARIEN, Conn. -- James “Pat” Winn, a longtime member of the Darien Police Department, died Monday, July 20, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., after a long illness. He was 73.
Winn was born in Stamford on Oct. 24, 1941, to James and Elizabeth Winn.
According to the Police Department, Winn was appointed in 1970, becoming the first African-American police officer in its history. .
He received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Iona College in 1976 and was promoted to sergeant in 1980 and then to lieutenant in 1983. He retired in 2000.

Hrhcare Renames Peekskill Facility For Founder Jeannette Phillips
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Hudson River Healthcare, a nonprofit medical organization in Peekskill, recently was renamed in honor of one of its founding mothers.
At ceremonies Monday, July 13, marking its 40th anniversary, the flagship center was formally dubbed the “Jeannette J. Phillips Health Center,” HRHCare officials said.
Phillips, who was the organization’s first board member, was present to help cut the ribbon at the dedication, according to a press release. The other founders were the late Mary Wood, Pearl Woods and Willie Mae Jackson.

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Vendors can now register for the annual "Celebrate Somers" event, says the town’s Chamber of Commerce.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Filled with charm and culture, the village of Tarrytown is the subject of the latest “Living In” column in The New York Times.
