Beacon Ambulance Corps Bolsters Bookkeeping After Losing $20,000 To Thieves
BEACON, N.Y. -- Policies have been bolstered at the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps after, police said, scammers hacked its president’s email account and stole close to $20,000, according to a report by the Poughkeepsie Journal.
The new bookkeeping measures now require that purchases of more than $1,000 undergo a wait period and be signed off on by two senior members of the corps, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
There have been no arrests in the case and the loss was covered by the corps’ insurance police, the Poughkeepsie Journal story said.

Stamford Man Arrested In Fake Gun Case, Now Charged In Strip Club Brawl
STAMFORD, Conn. – A Stamford man, already in hot water after a dangerous confrontation with police, has been arrested again, according to a report by the Stamford Advocate.
Elias Garcia-Ramirez, 29, now faces attempted assault, breach of the peace and other charges after an early Sunday dust-up at a city strip club, the Stamford Advocate reported.
Garcia-Ramirez apparently was drunk, police said, when he went after officers responding to a report of a disorderly patron, the Stamford Advocate story said.

State's List Of Struggling East Ramapo Schools Gets Longer
RAMAPO, N.Y. – More schools in the troubled East Ramapo school district are in need of improvement, the state Education Department says, according to a report by lohud.
Last year, five schools were identified by the state as needing watching; this year, it’s eight, the lohud report said.
According to lohud, the eight schools are: Chestnut Ridge Middle School (which has been given a "priority" designation), Ramapo High School, Spring Valley High School, Pomona Middle School, and four elementary schools -- Grandview, Margetts, Elmwood, and Eldorado.

Nyack To Get New Supermarket This Spring
NYACK, N.Y. – Nyack will get a much-needed new supermarket this spring, according to a report by News12.
An independent grocer is planning a May opening, the News12 story said.
According to a story by lohud, Rudy Nunez, who owns supermarkets in the Bronx and Queens, has been scoping out the marketplace for a while and plans to open at the site of the former Stop and Shop in the Hub Shopping Center off Route 59.
The Stop and Shop closed quite a while ago, done in by competition from three other supermarkets -- Shoprite, Pathmark, and A&P, lohud reported.

Bedford Holistic Health Center To Launch Community Garden
BEDFORD, N.Y. -- It may not feel like spring is right around the corner, but some in Bedford are already getting ready for the growing season.
SunRaven, a holistic health center off Guard Hill Road, said by this time next month dozens of residents will be getting their green thumbs dirty as they prepare the soil in a new community garden.
The center, aka the “home of slow medicine,” is run by Dr. Michael and Robin Queen Finkelstein.

Suffern Police Thwart Trickster Who Tried To Steal Thousands From Woman
SUFFERN, N.Y. -- An elderly resident was nearly scammed out of thousands of dollars last week by a thief posing as her grandson, Suffern police said.
The doting grandma had received a phone call from the so-called grandson who claimed to have been arrested in the Dominican Republic, police said.
Someone else then got on the phone and told the woman to mail them $9,200 in cash to bail him out of jail, police said.
The unwitting victim withdrew the money, went to a UPS store, and sent them the money. A few hours later, she got another call, this time demanding $18,000.
