Weston Schools Tells Custodians' Employer To Resolve Labor Dispute
WESTON, CONN. -- The Weston school board, which has been asked to step into the middle of a labor dispute, has advised the company which supplies the district with janitorial services to clean up its own mess.
Shamrock of New England employs newly unionized school custodians, the board recently pointed out in a public statement.
Therefore, it said, the district has no control over those employees’ wages and benefits.

Rhinebeck Woman Charged With Shoplifting At Walmart
ULSTER, N.Y. -- A Rhinebeck woman faces shoplifting charges after she was arrested at the Walmart Superstore in Ulster, police said.
Lauren A. Lazarchik, 29, was arrested on Wednesday, Jan. 27, after store officials accused her of taking $108.53 worth of merchandise without paying for it, police said.
Lazarchik was charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor, and is to appear in Town of Ulster Justice Court at an unnamed date, police said.
Suffern Police Report Traffic, Other Arrests
SUFFERN, N.Y. -- Suffern police reported making several arrests this week.
An unidentified 44-year-old Garnerville woman, who was pulled over on Washington Avenue, and an unidentified 36-year-old Congers woman, who was stopped on Lafayette Avenue, were both charged with driving with suspended driver’s licenses and registrations, police said.
Police said they also charged an unidentified 50-year-old Suffern man, who was wanted on a bench warrant. He was sent to Rockland County Jail on a $1,000 bail, police said.
Stamford Youth Fired Flare Gun At Doctor's Office, Police Say
STAMFORD, CONN. -- A 16-year-old Stamford boy is facing reckless endangerment and other charges after police said he fired a flare gun while in a local pediatrician’s examining room, according to a report by The Stamford Advocate.
The youth, whose name was not being released because of his age, is undergoing a mental health evaluation, The Stamford Advocate reported.
No one was injured during the incident Thursday, but police searching the suspect’s home said they found knives, hatchets and other flare guns, according to The Stamford Advocate story.

Westlake High School Team To Compete In Science Olympiad
MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- A team of Mount Pleasant students will be building bridges and ping pong ball flinging devices this weekend at a science Olympiad, say local educators.
Fourteen students from Westlake High School will be taking part as a team in 21 events at the lower Hudson Valley regionals on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Byram Hills High School in Armonk.
According to Ray Szczerba, a 9th-grade Earth sciences teacher, the team has been preparing for the competition since October.

Ramapo Police Charge Man With Marijuana Possession, Respond To Accidents
RAMAPO, N.Y. -- A Brewster man faces possession of marijuana charges after he was spotted dozing off in his car in a parking lot in Sloatsburg, Ramapo police said.
According to a post on the police department’s Facebook page, the unidentified 46-year-old man was in possession of a glass smoking pipe and a small bottle of pot.
The arrest was made around 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, police said.
He was ticketed, released, and given a court date in February, police said.
