Prisoner Swap: First Photo Shows New Jersey WSJ Reporter In Release From Russian Captivity
Evan Gershkovich is a free man. The 32-year-old New Jersey native was among three United States residents released from prison in Russia in on Thursday, Aug. 1, in what's being called the biggest prisoner swap between since 1991. Gershkovich, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, and radio journalism Alsu Kurmasheva, were the prisoners released to American soil. The massive swap freed more than two dozen prisoners from six different countries. Anthony "Tony" Camal, a world-renowned Judo master and Paterson firefighter, died on Monday, July 29, according to his obituary on the Festa Memorial website. He was 63 years old. Raised in Inwood, NY, Camal later moved to Totowa and Paterson, where he served for 15 years on the fire department before retiring as captain in 2013. He later settled in Woodland Park. Camal was the head sensei of Camal & Cruz Judo and Jiu Jitsu Academy since 1995, having been a sixth-degree black belt and world champion, according to his obituary. Prince William County police shot and killed an armed 22-year-old man following an overnight incident in Woodbridge, authorities said. Officers were called to a home on the 3400 block of Caledonia Circle on reports of a suicidal person around 8:20 p.m., county police said in a release. Delays along NJ Transit's Morris & Essex Line were being reported due to a dump truck that struck a train Wednesday afternoon, July 31. A Route 17 gas station clerk and the man who sold him an illegal firearm have both been arrested, police in Ridgewood said. Ridgewood Police Officer Malone was on patrol when he went into a gas station on the northbound side of Route 17 around 2 a.m. on June 9, Ridgewood Police Chief Forest Lyons said.
