Bloomfield Man Convicted Of Murdering Gas Station Attendant: Prosecutors A 36-year-old Bloomfield man was convicted of murdering Jahque Benbow, a 23-year-old gas station attendant in May 2022, prosecutors announced. On Tuesday, Oct. 10, a jury found Lamar Sommers guilty of murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder and two weapons charges, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said. He faces a minimum of 30 years in prison when he is sentenced in December, Stephens said. Power Players! Three In North Jersey Win $50K In Lotto While no one won the big Powerball jackpot on Monday, Oct. 9, three North Jersey lottery players are not complaining. Two tickets sold in Bergen County and one sold in Warren County matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball drawn winning the $50,000 third-tier prize. The tickets were sold at West Hudson Inc. in Englewood, Circle P Food Store in New Milford and Family Food Mart in Hackettstown.  The winning numbers for the drawing were: 16, 34, 46, 55 and 67. 16-Year-Old Newark Teen Fatally Struck On Garden State Parkway: State Police A 16-year-old teenage boy from Newark was fatally struck on the Garden State Parkway in Irvington on Monday, Oct. 9, state police said. At 9:24 p.m., state troopers responded to the Garden State Parkway North 143C ramp, Detective Jeffrey Lebron said.  An investigation revealed a vehicle was traveling northbound when the 16-year-old entered the roadway and was struck, suffering fatal injuries, Lebron said. The accident remains under investigation, Lebron said.

Irvington Shooting Victim Found Lying In Street: Maplewood Police A person who was shot in Irvington was found lying in the street in Maplewood on Monday, Oct. 9, Maplewood police said. At 2:11 p.m., police in Maplewood responded to Evelyn Court and found the victim, Maplewood Police Chief Albert Sally said. They were taken to a nearby hospital, Sally said. An investigation by Maplewood police determined the shooting occurred in Irvington and the Irvington Police Detective Bureau will be handling the investigation, Sally said. Longtime Linden Police Officer Matthew Carew Dies: 'A Class Act' Matthew Carew, who served in the Linden Police Department for 40 years, died on Friday, Oct. 6 at the age of 70, the Linden Police Department announced. A Rahway resident, Carew started as a police officer the Keansburg Police Department before transferring to Linden, according to his obituary. He retired in 2014. Carew is survived by his wife, Rita, his children, Andrew and Christopher, his grandchildren, Mia, Ayva, Chloe and Riley and other relatives. While You Were Sleeping: Burglars Break Into Verona Home: Police Verona Police are attempting to find two burglars who broke into a home on Sunday, Oct. 1 while residents were sleeping. At 4:30 a.m., two masked people wearing gloves entered the home via an unlocked door, police said. They left with a small carry bag that was inside the home, police said. They returned two minutes later and retrieved a backpack and then exited the home again, police said. Police believe they were searching for a key fob to the vehicle in the driveway but were unsuccessful. The occupants of the home were unaware of the break-in until later that morning.
