Bedford Free Library Holds Annual Teen Writing Contest BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The Bedford Free Library is sponsoring its seventh annual writing contest for high school students in the community. All entries must be received by Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m. Winners and their families will be invited to an awards tea to receive their prizes on Wednesday, March 18. In each category, first prize is $100, and second prize is $50. Categories include: Fiction, which is a creative piece limited only by your imagination (save poetry for the library contest in April). Lowey Marks Social Security Anniversary In White Plains WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, the ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee, joined a group of local senior citizens at The Esplanade Senior Residences on Saturday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Social Security. The first Social Security check was issued on Jan. 31, 1940. Lowey talked about the importance of Social Security benefits for seniors after a lifetime of hard work, and local seniors shared personal stories about how Social Security has positively affected their lives. The group then enjoyed a celebratory cake.

Putnam's Serino Named Chair Of Senate Aging Committee PUTNAM, N.Y.— State Sen. Sue Serino was recently appointed chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Aging. Norwalk Teen Completes Australian Backpacking Course NORWALK, Conn. — Hadley Merrill, 19, of Norwalk, recently completed a semester-long wilderness expedition traveling in Australia with the National Outdoor Leadership School located in Lander, Wyo. NOLS believes people thrive when challenged. During the Australia Backpacking course, students did not have access to modern conveniences and were challenged to step outside their comfort zones.
