Favorite Thanksgiving Recipe No Longer A Drag Thanks To Southport Grandma
Deviled eggs are a popular Thanksgiving starter but peeling hard-boiled eggs is a loathsome task. Just ask grandmother Bonnie Tyler of Southport who got "frustrated" every time she peeled eggs for her favorite recipe. The dreary task led Tyler and Sheila Torgan, also of Southport and both entrepreneurs, to invent a device that makes peeling eggs a cinch. The idea came to Tyler in 2015 the day after making a batch of deviled eggs for a cocktail party in their neighborhood. "Of course, the eggs would not peel, and I suddenly remembered why I stopped making deviled eggs," she said. The next…

City's Tweens Don't Have To Latchkey
The latchkey kids of the '80s are raising over-parented children involved in sports, music lessons, scouts, religious classes and plenty of extras. But not every working family can provide these programs for their tweens. What adolescents do in the downtime between school dismissal and 8 p.m.—and often later—is a focus of the White Plains Youth Bureau (WPYB), which runs the Eastview Teen Lounge, a supervised setting with computers, video games, a place to do homework and structured activities. The lounge is open to all White Plains students in grades 7 to 12 but used predominantly by s…

School Steps Up Vaping Prevention As New Dangers Surface
They come in sweet and sugary fruit flavors, cinnamon, vanilla, mango—even chocolate. Vaping flavors seem hard to resist for anyone with a sweet tooth, and teenagers are no exception. E-cigarettes and other vaping devices are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid into an inhalable vapor, which typically contains nicotine (though not always), flavorings and other chemicals. They can resemble traditional tobacco cigarettes, cigars or pipes, or pens and USB memory sticks. A second vaping-related death has been confirmed in New York State leaving health officials calling for f…

Youth Bureau Picks Up Slack For City's Working Parents
What are parents to do when the school day ends before they can leave their jobs? White Plains has a plan for that: The White Plains Youth Bureau (WPYB) and city's schools now work in tandem to keep children after school while parents are at work. "White Plains saw the need to develop after-school programming and teen centers nearly 50 years ago,” said Frank Williams, Jr., executive director of the WPYB in an email exchange with Daily Voice Plus. The Youth Bureau, for the record, will begin its 50th anniversary celebration, expected to last yearlong, on Jan. 1, 2020. "[The city] is a great …

Around Fairfield Schools: Fake News In Ridgefield, Greenwich Dedication, Student Wins
Students recently were alerted to decades-old fake news images thanks to the keen eye of a media specialist at a Ridgefield school. Scotts Ridge Middle School seventh-graders were learning about energy transfer in ecosystems, in their science class when it happened. The widespread burning of the Amazon rainforest was the "phenomenon that we used to kick off this unit," explained their teacher Charlsie Vanderrest. During the lesson, students were asked: How does a disaster affect the systems in place in an environment? The idea to use the science lesson to help the students beco…

'Family Friendly' After-School Care Eliminates Need For Longer School Day In White Plains
Would a 10-hour school day fly in Westchester? Unlikely. A robust menu of after-school programs already exists across the county's cities, towns and villages -- either at the schools or sponsored by non-profit organizations and municipalities. Daily Voice Plus examined its impact on the White Plains School District, -- the fifth largest in the county serving more than 7,000 students in nine schools including five elementary schools. Superintendent Joseph Ricca was asked about legislation proposed by presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Kamala D. Harris, a Democrat from California, to…

Rye Neck High Students Take Ethical Look At Area's Water
How often do you think about the water you drink? Residents of Larchmont and Mamaroneck "understand and value" theirs, according to a "public perceptions" survey done by student activists at Rye Neck High School. The students, junior Gabriel Miller and seniors Sean Diamond and Owen Robertson, and graduates Andrew Alcin, Renue Chin and Ryan Germani belong to a student-run think tank called the Action Research for Community Change. In 2018, they were asked to carry out a "consumer confidence survey" for the Westchester Joint Water Works—WJMM, at numerous locations in the two to…
