Two Cortlandt Schools Ranked With Country's Best

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - Two of the Town of Cortlandt's high schools made it into Newsweek's top 1,000 high schools in the nation. Croton-Harmon High School was ranked 311 on the list and Hendrick Hudson High School was ranked number 747 this week.

"The fact that we seem to be providing our students with opportunities valued by others is always rewarding," said Superintendent of Croton-Harmon Schools Edward Fuhrman.

Both Principal James Mackin of Hendrick Hudson High School and Fuhrman said they were not surprised by the ranking and credited the rigor of their programming with their appearance on the list.

According to Newsweek, the rankings took into account graduate rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), Advanced Placement tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ ACT scores (10 percent), average AP scores (10 percent) and average AP course offered per student (5 percent).

The announcement came on the heels of the U.S. News and Report and World Report ranking of 22,000 schools in 49 states. Croton-Harmon High School ranked 372 in the nation, 51 in New York State, and Hendrick Hudson High School rated 546 in the nation, 73rd in New York State in that list. The U.S. News and World Report rankings were based on state exit exams and AP test data.

In Newsweek's 2011 ranking, Croton-Harmon High School was ranked number 193. Hendrick Hudson High School was not listed in 2011.
