CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Retired Croton resident Virginia Calcutti announced her candidacy Thursday as a write-in candidate for Croton trustee, giving Croton residents a third option for the two open board of trustees seats, after an unprecedented three-way Democratic primary in Croton's first-ever fall electoral season.
"I'm tired of the overspending," Calcutti said. "I'm tired of our residents not being heard. I'm tired of not getting answers to their questions. I want to improve, if possible, our leadership, and I want accountability for that leadership. Oh my God, there's a whole bunch of things."
Calcutti said she will be having a flyer out real soon with her positions, which include reducing taxes.
The 74-year-old retiree worked as a secretary at Croton-Harmon High School for 24 years. For the last two years, she's been a faithful attendee of board meetings, "unless I'm sick," she said.
Calcutti said she will not run under a particular party line, but is running with the support of a bipartisan committee.
"I am a registered Democrat, slash independent thinker," she said. "I don't always vote my party. I vote for who's going to do the job for me. We do a lot of needless spending; I want to cut out these consultants that we're spending a lot of money for all the time."
Other Croton electoral surprises included the announcement by the Croton Republican Committee that no candidates would be endorsed in 2012, and that incumbent Trustee Greg Schmidt would not seek reelection.
